Electrochemical and Catalytic Behaviors of Ni–YSZ Anode for the Direct Utilization of Ammonia Fuel in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract: In this study the electrochemical performances of Ni-YSZ anode in humidified H 2 , NH 3 and CH 4 fuels were compared under almost the same partial pressure of oxygen at 500-800 • C. The cell performance was significantly affected by fuel species and operating temperature. The single cell exhibited higher performance in wet NH 3 as compared with that in CH 4 , which was caused by the difference in the catalytic activity of anode for the hydrogen production in wet NH 3 and CH 4 . Thus, it was clarified that NH 3… Show more

“…On the other hand, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which are characterized by the high‐temperature operation, are considered to be suitable for the utilization of an ammonia fuel. Some groups have reported that the current–voltage ( I–V ) characteristics of direct NH 3 ‐fueled SOFCs with a conventional Ni–yttria‐stabilized zirconia (Ni–YSZ) anodes were close to those obtained in hydrogen fuel above 700 °C . In previous works, it was demonstrated that the utilization of NH 3 in SOFCs proceeded in two steps as follows , : 2normalN normalH3 (g) normalN2 (g)+normal 3 normalH2 (g) 2 normalH2 (g)+ normalO2 (g)2 normalH2 normalO(g) …”

“…In addition, the electrochemical properties and performances of practical SOFCs fueled by decomposed and autothermally cracked NH 3 are still unclear. Moreover, there have been only a few studies using commercial‐size cells or stacks for NH 3 ‐fueled SOFC systems, though coin‐type cells have been applied in the previous studies . Dekker et al achieved the long‐term operation (3,000 h) of the direct NH 3 ‐fueled SOFC with a commercial‐size single cell .…”

“…Two different Ni-based cermet anodes (Ni-YSZ and Ni-GDC) were prepared. The NiO-YSZ anode powder was prepared by the physical mixing route as described elsewhere [24]. On the other hand, NiO-GDC anode powder was prepared by two methods; i) physical mixing and ii) glycine-nitrate combustion routes.…”

“…Such a surface basicity is expected to be favorable for weakened adsorption of NH3 and dissociation of N-H bond. On the other hand, it was proven that the hydrogen has a retardant effect for both Ni-YSZ and Ni-GDC anodes blew 800 o C [24,40], and the rate of ammonia decomposition reaction depends on ammonia and hydrogen partial pressure according to the following equation;…”
