Electrochemical and optical studies of furan and thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene end capped benzotriazole derivatives

Abstract: Two new 2‐dodecyl benzotriazole (BTz) based donor‐acceptor‐donor (DAD) type polymers were synthesized and characterized in terms of their electrochemical and spectral properties. These DAD type polymers were synthesized electrochemically from furan or thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene (TT) end‐capped BTz monomers. Furan based and thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene based monomers showed monomer oxidations at 1.15 and 1.25 V, respectively, which eased the formation of conducting polymer films without overoxidation. Cyclic voltammetry … Show more

“…However, ITO electrode surface coated with C2 ‐PMMA nanofiber has a slightly lower oxidation and reduction peak current as compared to C1 ‐PMMA nanofiber after 20th cycle. The reversible oxidation and reduction peaks of C1 ‐PMMA nanofiber were attributed to the redox process of the thiophene substituents …”

“…This can be explained principally by the strong electron attracting effect of substituted thiophene and furan groups, present in the tested C1‐ and C2 ‐based nanofibers . The C2 ‐PMMA has an elongated conjugated and electron‐rich structure thanks to the C2 unit, and less oxidation than the different donor substituted C1 ‐based monomer . The oxidation and reduction current peaks can be due to the formation of the radical cation/anion of thiophene and furan units, respectively .…”

“…The spectroelectrochemistry of the P(TT‐EDTT‐TT) films was performed to elucidate its photoelectricity properties as shown in Figure (A) and Table . The absorption maxima occurred at 485 nm showing tiny blueshift than 480 nm for P(TT‐EDOT‐TT) and the wide moderate energy absorption range may bring the color contribution of green or blue . Polaronic absorption emerged into the visible region, about 725 nm for P(TT‐EDTT‐TT) and 745 nm for P(TT‐EDOT‐TT), which brought the orange‐red for color contribution of polymers.…”

“…Conjugated polymers have several advantages such as multiple colorations within the same material, rapid switching time, tunability of the electrical and optical properties, lower band gap between HOMO and LUMO bands because of more extended π‐conjugation, electron affinities and transport properties, low‐cost fabrication process, easy fabrication of thin film devices by printing technologies, and good mechanical properties for producing compact, lightweight and flexible electronic devices …”
