Electrochemical Behaviour of Iron in Simulated Acid Rain in Presence of Achillea Millefolium L.

Abstract: The effect of the aqueous extract of Achillea millefolium L. (AM) on the electrochemical behaviour of iron in a simulated acid rain solution (pH 4.5) was studied by electrochemical techniques cyclic voltammetry, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out over a wide range of AM concentrations. The results of all techniques showed that AM extract contributes to iron passivation. The films formed in the presence of AM extract were thinner and more resist… Show more

“…We have reported that in the presence of this extract an inhibition efficiency is very low around 26 % at concentration of 1.00 g L -1 . [17] The degree of surface coverage values (θ) obtained from CV measurements using the Eq. (2) assuming a direct relationship between surface coverage and inhibition efficiency was tested graphically.…”

“…These oxides in contact with water in the atmosphere cause a formation of an acid rain (sulphuric and nitric acids) and promote the corrosion. [13][14][15][16][17] A rainfall with pH < 5.6 is considered the acid rain. The importance of the protection against corrosion in acidic solutions is increased by the fact that iron and steel are more susceptible to be attacked in aggressive media.…”

“…AR has been a serious global problem for several decades in many regions, and the response of various ecosystems to AR stress and the profound negative effects have been studied [16,78,79]. Recently, many studies have focused on the metallic material electrochemical behavior (including corrosion behavior) [82][83][84][85], reinforced-concrete structure seismic behavior and performance [86], composites wear behavior [87,88], and element leaching behavior in metal-contaminated soil [89] under AR stress. Phosphorus-related research has also become attractive to researchers.…”

“…The possibility of corrosion inhibition of iron by natural antioxidants from Satureja montana L. was the focus of this study. In our earlier paper [18] the extract of the Achillea millefolium L. was investigated as corrosion inhibitor on a iron sample in an acid rain solution. The aim of the present work is to study the influence of Satureja montana L. extract on the corrosion behaviour of iron in NaCl solution.…”
