Electrochemical Detection of Hormones Using Nanostructured Electrodes

Naila Haroon,
Keith J. Stine

Abstract: Hormones regulate several physiological processes in living organisms, and their detection requires accuracy and sensitivity. Recent advances in nanostructured electrodes for the electrochemical detection of hormones are described. Nanostructured electrodes’ high surface area, electrocatalytic activity, and sensitivity make them a strong hormone detection platform. This paper covers nanostructured electrode design and production using MOFs, zeolites, carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, and 2D materials such… Show more

“…Moreover, due to the nano-size effect, metal nanomaterials with different shapes and sizes can improve different sensing effects. Carbon-based materials, encompassing graphenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and others, have the potential to enhance the functioning of biosensors, attributed to their broad potential window, outstanding electrochemical stability, substantial mechanical resilience, and compatibility with biological systems ( Haroon and Stine, 2023 ). CPs are easy to synthesize and have good biocompatibility.…”

“…AuNPs are used in devices such as biosensors, which are used in medicine, such as in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, and in the detection of pathogens, viruses, or bacteria. They are also used for chemical analysis, for example, in the detection of metal ions [56]. It is known that the complex obtained from AuNPs stabilized with lignosulfonate and mercury ions can be used as a modifier for the electrode in the development of amperometric sensors.…”
