“…The hydrophobic viologen compound used in this study was 1,1′-didodecyl-4,4′-bipyridinium (DDV 2+ ) dibromide, , which was synthesized according to a published method. This viologen compound is soluble in organic solvents (1-butanol, methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, and N , N ′-dimethylformamide) and is almost colorless and transparent. However, it undergoes a one-electron reduction reaction (DDV 2+ + e – ⇌ DDV + ) to become a colored cation radical and returns to the original transparent/colorless state by the reoxidation reaction. The DDV 2+ is highly hydrophobic and is water-insoluble. , Nanoparticle film electrodes were prepared by applying a mixed dispersion of nanoparticles and DDV 2+ ·2Br – to ITO or FTO.…”

“…ITO nanoparticles (Nanotek1 Powder ITO-R, average particle size: 30 nm) were purchased from C. I. Kasei Co., Ltd., 19 and were used as received. The viologen compound used in this study was 1,19-didodecyl-4,49-bipyridinium (DDV 2+ ) dibromide, 20,21 which was synthesized according to a literature method. [22][23][24] This viologen compound is soluble in organic solvents (1butanol, methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, methylethylketone, chloroform and dimethylformamide) and almost colorless and transparent.…”

“…This film formation technique is simple, cost‐effective and can be applied to many compounds. It is not only suitable for organic compounds, [16c, 17] but also for polymers [18] and fullerenes [19] . Unlike general electrochemical film formation processes via electrochemical reactions where the starting compounds undergo reactions, this approach gives films of intact organic compounds carried by micelles.…”
