Electrochemical Sensors for Monitoring of Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution

Abstract: This chapter aims a comprehensive presentation of the most common electrochemical sensors used in the real monitoring applications of air purity testing. Oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are gases, which can be accurately detected and measured. Too high or too low oxygen concentration levels make the air improper for breathing. Hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide are dangerous species; any leakage needs to be pinpointed. A calibrated network of sensors fo… Show more

“…The electrochemical gas sensor allows an analyte gas to pass through a membrane at an electrode where it is reduced or oxidized. (25) It measures gases at relatively low concentrations and is capable of detecting a wide range of different gases. The electrochemical gas sensor can be in either a two-or three-electrode configuration.…”

“…The semiconductor metal oxide sensing material translates this interaction into changes in electronic charge density and charge carrier mobility. (25) As a result, there is a change of the electrical signal. Most electrochemical gas sensors are amperometric sensors, where the change in current indicates the rate of the electrolytic process in the sensing material.…”

“…In TDLS the detected signal is proportional to the length of the optical path while in photoacoustic spectroscopy, it is related to the laser emitted power, which allows keeping a high sensitivity even in a compact gas cells.
