Electrodermal Activity: Simultaneous Recordings

Abstract: Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a sensitive measure of the sympathetic nervous system activity. It is used to describe changes in the skin electrical properties. This chapter aimed to show advantages of simultaneous recordings of EDA parameters at the same skin site over other recordings. The literature databases, Web of Science and Google Scholar, were searched using terms like "electrodermal activity," "sequential recording," "simultaneous recording," "skin conductance," "skin potential," and "skin susceptan… Show more

“…1 The latter can be split into two components: tonic, which measures absolute SC, and phasic, which measures skin response to external stimuli. 2 Skin response is the result of SG activity, which depends on the sweat constituents and SG morphology like sweat duct length, the crosssectional area of SG. Apart from this, the number of active SG also contributes for SC.…”

“…Sympathetic skin response (SSR) or electrodermal activity (EDA) projects the results of attention, emotional and incentive procedure inside the central nervous system that affects the body. [ 10 ] SSR is examined as modify in the skin’s strength to a little electrical flow or as distinction in electrical potential among dissimilar parts of the skin. It measures neutrally mediated effects on the skin’s sweat gland permeability.…”

“…In addition, once a controlled AC current or voltage is applied to the skin, it is possible to measure skin admittance or skin impedance and through which SC and SS can be obtained. Applying a controlled DC current or voltage provides measurement of the passive electrical properties of skin (SC or skin resistance) (Aldosky and Bari 2019). Compared to measurement of exosomatic properties, measurement of endosomatic SP is the simpler approach; however, endosomatic SP responses are increased both in positive and negative directions and can be monophasic positive and negative, biphasic, or triphasic, which complicate the process of scoring and interpretation of endosomatic results (Boucsein 2012).…”
