“…In a study by Liang and Chen (1997), it was shown that the detectability of gastric slow wave propagation from cutaneous EGG is dependent on the thickness of the abdominal wall and on the propagation velocity of the serosal slow wave. Another disadvantage of this method which was pointed out, among others, by Bortolotti (1998) is that the practicality of using EGG to detect alterations in slow wave frequency due to tachy-and bradygastria remains problematic in spite of considerable recent progress to improve filtering and analysis methods for this clinical procedure. Reservations concerning the significance of EGG as a diagnosis tool were also expressed by Camilleri et al (1998), who indicated that the precise meaning of dysrhythmias, signal amplitude changes and the duration of such abnormalities relative to gastric emptying as quantified by EGG remain to be clarified.…”

“…Studies have shown a good correlation between cutaneous EGG recordings and myoelectric signals recorded from gastric serosal leads [2] . However, there are major concerns regarding the clinical usefulness of this noninvasive procedure [3] . EGG has been advocated as a diagnostic test in the clinical evaluation of patients with unexplained nausea, vomiting and other dyspeptic symptoms to gain insight into the mechanisms of symptom generation.…”

“…Cutaneous EGG recordings offer a non-invasive approach to detect and characterise gastric slow wave recordings. At present, however, EGG has limited use in routine clinical care, and is best summarised by Bortolotti et al [7] as "a seductive promise, only partially kept". Improvements in recording reliable slow wave signals has allowed for the development of automated analysis methods.…”

“…EGG is not widely used in clinical practice due to difficulties in relating the signals to the underlying slow wave events [7]. In terms of recording specifications, a set of guidelines has been prescribed by the American Motility Society Taskforce to be adhered [8].…”
