Electrogenerated chemiluminescence. X. .alpha.,.beta.,.gamma.,.delta.-Tetraphenylporphine chemiluminescence

Abstract: Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (eel) resulting from the reaction of a,/3,7,5-tetraphenylporphin (TPP) anion radical with the cation radical of TPP, rubrene, or 10-methylphenothiazine in methylene chloride solutions is described. The eel emission is the same as that observed in TPP fluorescence and a mechanism is proposed

“…There * has been only one previous report of ecl from a Pc system, where very weak * emission was observed from metal-free Pc. 29 Ecl from these compounds is of pulsing between potentials for production of the +2 and -2 species produced the same ecl spectra; similar behavior has been seen previously, e.g., in S2+ 31a31b Ru(bpy) 2+ 31a and rubrene systems, and has been attributed to :.. reproportionation reactions that produce the lower oxidized or reduced Ii. …”

“…[13] TheE CL of porphyrins especially in organic systems have been drawn extensive attention in recent years since the pioneering work by Bard and co-workers. [14] Forexample,an oxygen-involved ECL enhancement of the tetraphenyl porphyrins with relative ECL efficiency as high as 4.21 was proven in our recent work, in which ECL of porphyrins was also found to be regulated by peripheral substituents and central metals. [15] However, as trong tendency to form aggregates in aqueous solution (or solid state) and deficient emission of porphyrins is conspicuous as aresult of emission quenching upon aggregation, which remains am ajor challenge in the ECL application of porphyrins especially for future biological analysis purposes.T wo stacking forms (edgeto-edge and face-to-face) attribute porphyrin luminophore moiety to generate J-and H-aggregates,respectively,through intermolecular forces (van der Waals force,h ydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic effect).…”

“…The extensive interest in porphyrins attributed to their distinguished spectroscopic characteristics, excellent chemical and photochemical stabilities along with their versatile photophysical properties by molecular modulation [13] . The ECL of porphyrins especially in organic systems have been drawn extensive attention in recent years since the pioneering work by Bard and co‐workers [14] . For example, an oxygen‐involved ECL enhancement of the tetraphenyl porphyrins with relative ECL efficiency as high as 4.21 was proven in our recent work, in which ECL of porphyrins was also found to be regulated by peripheral substituents and central metals [15] .…”

“…These four systems were chosen from several well-studied OLED phosphorescent dopants, Firpic [27a], Ir(fppy) 3 [27b], Ir(ppy) 3 [27b,27c], Ir(piq) 3 [27c]. Compared to Firpic and the three homoleptic complexes, the incorporation of DSBP 2À ligand caused a bathochromic shift of the water-soluble compounds when L were ppy and fppy.…”
