Electromagnetic compatibility of PLC adapters for in-home/domestic networks

Abstract: The use of programable logic controllers (PLC) technology in electrical networks 230 V causes electromagnetic radiation that interferes with other electrical equipment connected to the network [1–4]. Therefore, this article describes the issues of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of new PLC adapters used in IP broadband services in a multi-user environment. The measurements of disturbing electromagnetic field originated in PLC adapters were made in a certified laboratory EMC (laboratory of electromagnetic c… Show more

“…However, Common-Mode (CM) current arises due to line imbalance [ 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 ] producing undesired EMR. As a result, PLC modems must comply with Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) regulations that limit their EMR [ 25 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 ]. Several works report experiments on the EMR resulting from PLC signals [ 51 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 90 , 91 ].…”

“…Since the electrical wiring is not in principle intended for data transfer, the bandwidth for the positioning signals presents severe restrictions. Both the IBTO and IBTB PLPS must comply with Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) regulations [ 25 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 ] that limit the electromagnetic emissions, as any other equipment. PLC modems are designed to effectively use the wiring for communications and to comply with EMC regulations and thus appear as an adequate means for providing the PLPS infrastructure for IBTO and IBTB PLPS.…”

“…The time variance of a power line and its impact on communication is further described in [46][47][48][49][50][51]. PLC devices during their operation also radiate into nearby areas, so the device itself has to meet current EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) regulation limits [52].…”

“…Because of the numerous branches, this link exhibits a high attenuation, especially in the region over 10 MHz. However, a high attenuation cannot be compensated by the signal power enhancement for reasons of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), [8][9]. Therefore, the frequency domain of the RC4 reference channel will be practically utilizable up to 10 MHz without serious problems at the information signal transmission.…”
