Electromagnetic fission of238U at 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon

Abstract: Abstract. Electromagnetic fission of 23Su projectiles at E/A = 600 and 1000 MeV was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer at the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS. Seven different targets (Be, C, A1, Cu, In, Au and U) were used. By considering only those fission events where the two charges added up to 92, most of the nuclear interactions were excluded. The nuclear contributions to the measured fission cross sections were determined by extrapolating from beryllium to the heavier targets with the concept of factorizatio… Show more

“…Since ∼1995, βDF studies by the Berkeley group with stable beams in direct kinematics allowed to perform investigations of the neutron-deficient isotopes 242,244,246,248 Es [230,107,231]. In particular, the FFMD measurements for the neutron-deficient nuclides 242,244 Es could be achieved, confirming their asymmetric mass split, as for most of the nuclei in this region. The discovery of βDF of 186,188 Bi [232] and 192,194 At [233] was reported in experiments at the velocity filter SHIP (GSI).…”

“…At the Lujan Center, moderated spallation is used to generate neutrons from subthermal energies up to a few hundreds of keV [195]. Several fission experiments have been performed at LANSCE, including for example fission-cross-section measurements for the reactions n+ 240,242 Pu [195], using parallel-plate ionization chambers. An another example of fission measurements is an ongoing study of total kinetic energy (TKE) in the fission of actinides and its dependence on incident-neutron energy.…”
