Electromagnetic performance and impact damage of the microstrip antennas integrated in cylindrical three dimensional woven composite structures

Abstract: A three dimensional integrated microstrip antenna (3DIMA) is a novel multifunctional structure, which can perform as a load bearing structure and function as an antenna. In this study, a single-element and a double-element microstrip antenna were integrated into cylindrical three-dimensional woven glass fiber/epoxy composites respectively. Their electromagnetic performance and impact damage were investigated. The results showed that with the decrease of the curvature radii from 75 to 25 mm, the single-element … Show more

“…Another study focused on the influence of impact damage on a cylindrically conformal single and two element microstrip patch array CLAS [126]. This study also investigated the influence of the patch and array orientation relative to the cylindrical surface and noted that there was little change in the antennas before and after impact.…”

“…The cylindrical bending process was achieved by keeping the radius (r) of the cylinder constant at an optimized radius of 10 mm because decreasing the radius (i.e. increasing the curvature) from higher values to the optimized value increases the bandwidth of the antenna which is a desirable parameter for antenna performance [21,22].…”

“…[6][7][8] In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) woven composites with structural integrity based on three-dimensional textile technology have become a hot spot. [9][10][11] Especially the threedimensional woven spacer composites with lightweight, robust properties, and high specific strength, have attracted extensive attention in the field of lightweight composites. [12][13][14] Figure 1A-C are structural schematic diagrams of the model of the three-dimensional woven spacer composites.…”
