Electromagnetically induced transparency and retrieval of light pulses in a Λ-type and a V-type level scheme in Pr3+:Y2SiO5

Abstract: We examine electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), the optical preparation of persistent nuclear spin coherences and the retrieval of light pulses both in a Λ-type and a V-type coupling scheme in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal, cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The medium is prepared by optical pumping and spectral hole burning, creating a spectrally isolated Λ-type and a V-type system within the inhomogeneous bandwidth of the 3H4 ↔ 1D2 transition of the Pr3+ ions. By EIT, in the Λ-type scheme we drive a nuclea… Show more

“…We can see that by changing detuning from −200 GHz to resonant point (0 GHz) of E b , we can see that the right peak shifts toward right from bottom to top (shown by dashed line in Figure 3B). Here, level |1 is already split into |G a± by E a and when E b detuning approaches to resonant point then |G a− will further split into |G b−± with dressing effect of (|G b | 2 /Ŵ bb refer to (1). Figure 3C shows theoretical predications of time domain FL signals corresponding to Figure 3B.…”

“…Where ρ aa is probability of diagonal density matrix element at |0>. When E a and E b are open simultaneously, E b excitation from |0> to |2> in ket site, represented by off-diagonal density matrix (ρ (1) ca ) in perturbation chain, is also called coherence. In perturbation chain (E a ) * and (E b ) * are complex conjugate of E a and E b , respectively.…”

“…Thus, experiments on coherent interactions in a welldefined three-level scheme require optical preparation of the 053801-3 inhomogeneously broadened manifold. Preparation of the doped crystal usually relies on long pulse sequences, including pulse trains and/or combinations of frequency chirps, driving optical pumping processes [3,15,16]. Optical preparation is a major issue in all experiments, dealing with coherent interactions in doped solids.…”

“…In particular, the ideas of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and light storage [1][2][3] are prominent examples for such versatile coherent interactions. In light storage, a three-level quantum system interacts with two radiation pulses (the coupling and the probe pulse).…”
