“…Nuclei contained prominent nucleoli and wellstained chromatin, but were otherwise unremarkable. These findings are consistent with those described for ECL cells in rats (20,22,26) and in man Although there were no carcinoid tumors at 55 mg/kg of BL-6341 or in the rats receiving the reference compound (cimetidine at 950 mglkg), proliferations of argyrophil endocrine cells could be detected in these groups at both 1 and 2 years by use of appropriate silver stains. At 1 year, the argyrophil endocrine cell increase was significantly greater than in controls at both 300 and 55 mg/kg of BL-6341 (Table 11).…”

“…The results of these silver stains, especially the Sevier-Munger technique, suggested that the carcinoid tumors were composed of enterochromaffinlike (ECL) cells (20,22,23). The immunoperoxidase technique demonstrated the presence of histamine in the proliferated endocrine cells in the fundic mucosa.…”

“…They comprise ive major cell populations: gastrin cells and 5-hydroxytryptamine-storing enterochromaffin cells in the pyloric gland area (Hakanson, 1970; Larsson, HAkanson, Rehfeld, Stadil & Sundler, 1974); somatostatin cells which have a fairly uniform distribution in the entire glandular mucosa (cf. Alumets, Sundler & HAkanson, 1977); and histamine-storing 'enterochromaffin-lilie' cells which are of two different types, ECL and A-like cells, both of which occur in the oxyntic gland area where they are very numerous (HAkanson & Owman, 1967, 1969 HAkanson, Owman, Sporrong & Sundler, 1971; see also Solcia, Capella, Vassallo & Buffa, 1975).…”

“…Further physiological studies are required to elucidate the ways in which the distribution of gastrointestinal endocrine cells may be related to regulatory characteristics of the digest tract. Gastrointestinal endocrine cells not only have endocrine function, but also have the exocrine and paracrine effect (Bülbring & Crema, 1959;Håkanson, et al, 1971;Uvnäs-Wallensten & Rehfeld, 1976). In this paper, the argentaffine cells could be observed in the intrinsic membrane, or their protrusions extended into the intrinsic membrane and a lot of secretory granules was obvious around the protrusions, these morphologic basis proved that the sections of argentaffine cells can get though the intrinsic membrane and then into the blood circulation to exercise its function, thus confirmed the endocrine function of argentaffine cells.…”
