Electron microscopic observations on structures resembling myxovirus in human sarcomas

Abstract: Human tumors of mesenchymal origin contain cytoplasmic structures resembling ribonucleoprotein strands of paramyxoviruses. Similar structures have previously been reported in collagen diseases. The nature and function of these structures remain unresolved.

“…This may, therefore, provide an explanation for clinical observations in the higher grades/ stages of prostate carcinomas, which correlate with lower levels of cellular PAcP expression (3,(47)(48)(49)(50). These high grade tumors will eventually escape from anti-androgen or androgen deprivation therapy, despite unaltered expression of functional AR in these carcinomas (12,13,46).…”

“…Our preliminary results indicate that pp185 co-migrates with ErbB-2/neu protein in SDS gels. 3 Interestingly, in several independent systems, an induction of cellular differentiation by various differentiation agents is associated with a decreased cell growth and an increased expression of cellular PTPase activity (53)(54)(55)(56)(57). Thus, the study of PAcP, a differentiationassociated PTPase, for its possible functional role in growth regulation of prostate epithelium may provide us with useful information in understanding the putative role of other differentiation-associated PTPases in their respective cell growth regulation.…”

“…Despite a superficial resemblance to the nucleoprotein cores of myxoviruses (1,2,8,22), the tubules observed in endothelial cells and lymphocytes of patients with SLE appear to lack the helical periodicity of myxovirus cores (25,28,30). In this respect, the tubules also differ from the intranuclear filaments described in chronic polymyositis or subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (31,32).…”

“…The roll of zinc and its possible causal effects in prostate cancer has attracted attention in recent years. A human prostate gland has a unique feature to possess highlevel accumulation of zinc compared to other organs [1]. In prostate cancer tissue the unique zinc metabolism is altered, resulting in the decrease of zinc level in the epithelial cells [1,2].…”
