Electron paramagnetic resonance of Er3+, Dy3+, and Gd3+ in Y(CF3SO3)3⋅9H2O

Abstract: The paramagnetic resonance spectra of 1% Er3+ and 1% Dy3+ substituted in hexagonal Y(CF3SO3)3⋅9H2O (YTFMS) single crystals have been measured at 4.2 K and 9.215 GHz. Resonances due to Gd3+ impurities were identified and studied at 77 K. In each case, the results strongly resemble those for the given ion in an Y(C2H5SO4)3⋅9H2O (YES) or La(C2H5SO4)3⋅9H2O (LaES) host suggesting that R3+ site symmetry in YTFMS is also C3h. For Er3+, the spin Hamiltonian parameters are found to be g∥ =1.62, g⊥ =8.67, A=0.006 cm−1, … Show more

“…All the observed magnetic data together with the observed gvalues of Er 3+ in YTFMS are analyzed invoking CF interaction of C 3h site symmetry. The proposed CF also gives a good explanation of the observed g-values [2]. The other CF-dependent properties, viz., electronic-specific heat, nuclear-specific heat, temperature-dependent quadrupole splittings were also worked out using the proposed CF.…”

“…Magnetic ordering has been observed in case of various RTFMS with R ¼ Tb, Dy, Ho, and Pr by Friedberg group [3,5,11]. Among these RTFMS, TbTFMS, DyTFMS, and HoTFMS were ordered ferromagnetically with the transition temperatures (T c ) are 0.24, 0.11, and 0.23 K, respectively, and Pr trifluoromethanesulfonate ordered antiferromagnetically with the transition temperature T N ¼ 0.31 K. Also, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of Er 3+ , Dy 3+ and Gd 3+ in YTFMS has been observed by Bellesis et al [2]. The g-values, the magnetic hyperfine structure parameters and the quadrupole interaction parameter of Er 3+ in YTFMS have been reported by them [2].…”

“…Ordering of magnetic moments, spectra, and magnetic and thermal properties of a relatively new series of compounds, the rare-earth trifluoromethanesulfonate nonahydrates R(CF 3 SO 3 ) 3 Á 9H 2 O or RTFMS where R stands for a trivalent rare-earth ion have been studied extensively [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…The magnetic ordering [2,3], electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) [4] and heat capacity [3] of a number of RTFMS have been studied by the Friedberg group. They have measured the magnetic properties of TbTFMS in the temperature range 0.05-20 K [2].…”
