Electron temperatures during rapid subauroral ion drift events

Abstract: Abstract. Examples of data from DE-2 satellite instruments are presented. These illustrate the behaviour of plasma parameters in the F-region and adjacent topside ionosphere during rapid sub-auroral ion drift (SAID) events. In particular, a variety of behaviours of the electron temperature e is demonstrated, both within and equatorward of the SAID region. The Sheeld University plasmasphere-ionosphere model (SUPIM) is used to perform calculations in which a model SAID is applied to a plasma¯ux tube. The model r… Show more

“…SAID/SAPS‐related density troughs are formed due to enhanced rates, k1,2, of charge exchange of O+ ions with N2 ( k1) and O2 ( k2) and subsequent fast recombination of NO+ and O2+ ions (e.g., Schunk et al, ; Pavlov, ; Moffett et al, ) and ion outflows (Anderson et al, ). The depletion time is about τ()k1·false[N2false]+k2·false[O2false]110–15 min.…”

“…On the other hand, there are numerous examples when enhanced electron temperatures and density troughs are observed in regions of high ion drift speeds and high ion temperatures, especially during more strongly disturbed conditions (e.g. Foster et al, 1994;Moffett et al, 1998;Förster et al, 1999;Wang et al, 2006 1 ; and references therein). Therefore any generalization should be considered with due caution.…”
