Electronic Performance Support Technology: Defining the Domain

Abstract: Electronic performance support is an expanding area within the field of performance technology. This article reviews and classifies the literature, both conceptual and case‐based, in order to assess settings for use, initiating factors for development, and general features of the various systems. Identification of each article reviewed is presented in a matrix of categories that can be used to point those interested in specific aspects of this complex topic to the most pertinent information for their own needs… Show more

“…Research activities embedded in the design and development of CASCADE-SEA were structured to contribute to a growing body of knowledge in the domain of performance support. Earlier work in the field of performance support was dominated by an orientation toward 'proof of concept' thinking, as evidenced in the literature that populated journals at that time (for an overview of EPSS -related literature from 1989 to 1995, please refer to Hudzina, Rowley, & Wagner, 1996). Here, emphasis was given to defining the field (cf.…”

“…In this faction, the integrative approaches to performance support have been emphasized (see Table 5). For performance improvement, a key issue is an integration of diverse interventions: electronic performance support systems (Hudzina et al, 1996;Laffey, 1995;Ma & Harmon, 2006;Raybould, 1995), knowledge management (Massey et al, 2005), instructional design (Dean, 1997), technology (Jones & Laffey, 2000;Rosenberg, 1995), systems design (Gery, 1995), and measuring the interventions (Schaffer & Keller, 2003).…”

“…Technology-Enhanced Learning Environments: Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) is an electronic system that provides integrated, on-demand access to information, advice, learning, and tools to enable a high level of job performance (Hudzina, Rowley, & Wager, 1996;Stevens & Stevens, 1996). Simply stated, EPSS is a network of online and offline job resources.…”
