Electronic structure and photovoltaic application of BiI3

Abstract: Rapid recent improvement in photovoltaic efficiency in hybrid lead halide perovskite materials has provided the impetus for understanding other, related main-group halide systems. Here, we show that the closely related but less toxic bismuth iodide BiI3 can show promising optoelectronic properties. Layered binary BiI3 is used here as the active layer in planar solar cell architectures (efficiency approximately 0.3%). Experimental and computational studies of absolute band positions of BiI3 are also presented, … Show more

“…In this method, the intersection of the leading edge with the background level determines the position of the band offset. 19,22,27,30,163 However, this approximation can lead to erroneous fits in the case of band edges that are not abrupt. In particular, inaccuracies may arise from this method if the density of states at the leading edge is low and there is no distinct tangent to take, as occurs for many PIMs reported.…”

“…These include the valence and conduction band onsets with respect to the Fermi level, as well as the vacuum level position. 19,27,162 Photoemission spectroscopy is a powerful tool to investigate the band structure of novel semiconductor materials and the position of the Fermi level in the bandgap. The techniques are applicable not only to thin films, 163 but also single crystals, for which band positions need to be precisely known for electrical characterization and device applications.…”

“…As an alternative, researchers have looked into the possibility of incorporating bismuth instead, which forms air-stable structures. [274][275][276] However, preparing high-quality films has been challenging for these materials, and therefore the resulting device performance is still lower than for their lead-and tin-based counterparts. Recently, silver/bismuth-based elpasolites (more commonly known as double perovskites) with the general formula A 2 AgBiX 6 , (A = MA, FA or Cs; X = Cl, Br, I, Figure 16) have been suggested as a promising lead-free and air-stable alternative.…”
