Electronic structure of octane on Cu(1 1 1) and Ni(1 1 1) studied by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure

Abstract: The electronic structure of an octane film grown on Cu(111) and Ni(111) was studied using C K-edge near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). A pre-peak was observed on the bulk edge onset for the 1 ML thick octane films on the metal substrates. The pre-peak originated from metal-induced gap states (MIGS) in the band gap of octane. The intensity of the pre-peak for octane/Ni(111) was the same as that of octane/Cu(111), suggesting that there was little difference in the density of unoccupied MIGS betwe… Show more

“…The elucidation of the origin of such a CH soft mode is important for understanding the interaction between alkanes and metal surfaces and the surface reaction on heterogeneous catalysts . The previous experimental results show that the center of the soft ν CH band of adsorbed cyclohexane on metal surfaces ranges from 2490 to 2775 cm −1 (Table ), depending on the metal substrate and crystal face.…”

“…This apparent contradiction arises from the argument , that, in π-conjugated systems, the hybridization of the 3d metal’s d orbitals with the p orbitals of the atoms pointing across the interface promotes highly spin-polarized ISs. Although there are no π-electrons in alkanes, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements on the alkane n -octane (C 8 H 18 ) deposited on Ni(111) and Cu(111) showed the presence of ISs close to the Fermi level . It is therefore possible to obtain ISs despite the fully saturated carbon bonds in the isolated molecule.…”

We briefly consider the origin of these ISs.…”
