Electrophoretic deposition of graphene oxide reinforced chitosan–hydroxyapatite nanocomposite coatings on Ti substrate

Abstract: Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a facile and feasible technique to prepare functional nanocomposite coatings for application in orthopedic-related implants. In this work, a ternary graphene oxide-chitosan-hydroxyapatite (GO-CS-HA) composite coating on Ti substrate was successfully fabricated by EPD. Coating microstructure and morphologies were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle test, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. It was … Show more

“…Moreover, SEM images of the cross section show that chitosan/BG/lawsone coating developed a uniform thickness (8–10 μm). However, slight variations in the coating thicknesses and homogeneity have been observed among different researchers, as well as in the current study, which is possibly due to the difference in particle size and concentration of BG along with the variations in EPD parameters …”

“…The characteristic peaks of BG were determined in ML and PEEK/BG coatings at 460–500 cm −1 (bending vibration of Si‐O‐Si) and at 920–1030 cm −1 (stretching vibration of network modifiers in the glass structure). The characteristic peaks of chitosan were determined in ML and chitosan/BG/lawsone coatings such as stretching vibration of the CO bond in chitosan at 1080 cm −1 . The broad band around 1022 cm −1 may have appeared due to the overlapping of the CO bond in chitosan and the network modifiers in the glass structure .…”

“…Cheng's group also developed by EPD ternary hybrid coatings of GO (up to 1.5 wt%)/hyaluronic acid (HY)/HA [99], GO/silk fibroin(SF)/HA [101] and GO (up to 1.7 wt.%)/chitosan(CHS)/HA [102] over Ti substrates. In these ternary systems, SF, HY and CHS act as charging additive and dispersion agent during EPD.…”
