Electrophysiology in pigment epithelial changes

Abstract: The c‐wave of the ERG and the slow SP variations reflect mainly the activity of the pigment epithelium. However, both potentials are dependant upon the photoreceptors and/or the inner retina as well. In pigment epithelial abnormalities the c‐wave is reduced or abolished, and the slow SP variations, d.c. recorded directly or investigated with the EOG, reduced or abolished as well.

“…More importantly, we did not detect any obvious apoptosis of RPE cells in either the heterozygous or the homozygous KI mice, suggesting that the RPE is largely healthy. We also examined the ionic channel activity of RPE plasma membrane in our KI mouse models by measuring the slow ocular potentials of the ERG c ‐wave after a full dark adaptation (Nilsson, ; Steinberg, ). The c ‐wave amplitudes of the 4‐month‐old KI/KI and WT/KI mice are comparable to those of their WT siblings (Supporting Information ), indicative of a grossly physiologically functional RPE in heterozygous and homozygous KI mice.…”

“…The ERG will be delt with in more detail in a following paper, also published in the present issue of Acta Ophtalmol. (Nilsson 1985). The SP is generated across the apical surface of the pigment epithelium, where the cells are connected by tight junctions which constitute a substantial barrier against ion movements.…”

“…The experimental and clinical aspects of the SP will be dealt with in more detail in a following paper, also published in the present issue of Acta Ophtalmol. (Nilsson 1985). It ought to be pointed out that several hereditary degenerative retinal diseases, e.g.…”
