Electrospun poly(acrylic acid)/poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous adsorbents for Cu(ii) removal from industrial plating wastewater

Abstract: Nanofibrous adsorbents were fabricated by electrospinning with a blend solution of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers and used for copper (Cu(ii)) removal from industrial plating wastewater.

“…32 Moreover, the peaks at 822, 1091, and 1237 cm −1 were attributed to C-C-O, C-O, and C-C stretching, respectively. 33 Figure 1 shows also the characteristic ester absorption band (-CO-O and -CO-) of the cross-linked PAA/PVA and O-H group of the carboxyl group in PAA, in the range of 1740-1680 and 909 cm −1 , respectively. 12 When the polymer matrix and nanofiller material are interacted, some additional peaks and shifts may occur in the spectra of the resulting nanocomposites compared to the pure polymer.…”

“…The q e was increased from 52.98 to 74.80 mg/g as solution pH increased from 4 to 6. The carboxylate groups of the G1H20 nanoparticles were partially protonated to generate carboxylic acid groups at lower pH, which results in competition between Cu(II) and hydrogen ions for the same adsorption sites [ 41 ]. Yang et al found that the adsorbed amount of Cu(II) was increased with increasing the solution pH from 2.5 to 6.5 [ 11 ].…”

“…[19] revealed that the fabrication of superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surface is feasible by surface functionalization . Park et al showed the use of electrospun poly(acrylic acid)/poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous adsorbents for Cu(II) removal from industrial plating wastewater [20]. In our previous study, fluoxetine was removed both from breast milk and cow milk by PVA/PAA based nanofiber of which surface is modified by dimethylsuberimidate [13], in this study the surface of the nanofiber is modified with both CDI and dimethylsuberimidate to increase the immobilization rate of antibody to the PVA/PAA based nanofiber surface.…”
