Electrospun Silver Coated Polyacrylonitrile Membranes for Water Filtration Applications

Abstract: The scarcity of drinking water and the contamination of water sources in underdeveloped countries are serious problems that require immediate low-tech and low-cost solutions. In this study, we fabricated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) porous membranes coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and demonstrated their use for water filtration and water treatment applications. The membranes were prepared by electrospinning a PAN solution and treating in a hydroxylamine (NH2OH) aqueous solution to form –C(NH2)N–OH groups th… Show more

“…Using the resazurin assay, a significant antimicrobial activity ( A ) of AgNPs-functionalized membrane ( A was equal to 5 or even higher) was determined. Such a high antimicrobial activity is, however, not surprising, as AgNPs can target a broad spectrum of organisms (Marambio-Jones and Hoek 2010) and an antimicrobial potential of various kinds of water filtration membranes modified with AgNPs has been declared several times (Huang et al 2016; Mecha and Pillay 2014; Parekh et al 2018). On the other hand, A values for all QAS-functionalized membranes were lower than 1, which shows no significant antimicrobial activity of QAS itself.…”

“…Then, the membrane is placed in 10 mL of 1 X PBS solution and vortexed for 2 min to transfer any remaining bacteria from the membrane to the 1 X PBS solution. Afterward, the quantity of surviving bacterial cells is evaluated by plating the extracted solution onto LB agar plates and subsequent colony counting after 12 h of incubation at 37 °C ( Pant et al, 2011 ; Parekh et al, 2018 ; Fig. 3 c).…”

“…Based on the exponential growth of the population, it has been estimated that the human population will reach about 9 billion by 2050 ( Ray et al, 2016 ). Thus, the availability of clean drinking water sources to this enormous population will turn to one of the most critical problems mankind has to address ( Parekh et al, 2018 ). The World Health Organization has stated that safe drinking water accessibility is the concern of about 785 million people and 2 million people use a contaminated water source for drinking ( WHO, 2020 ).…”

“…Many diseases, such as chronic lung disease and lung cancer, are mainly caused by PM2.5 (Buivydiene et al , 2019; Mohraz et al , 2019). In addition, PM2.5 particles contain many fine-grained pollutants, such as various fungi and bacteria, spores and pollen allergen, which could lead to allergies or respiratory diseases (Chen et al , 2019; Parekh et al , 2018; Patel et al , 2019). There are two ways to protect people from PM2.5.…”
