Electrostatically Interactive Injectable Hydrogels for Drug Delivery

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Several injectable hydrogels have been developed extensively for a broad range of biomedical applications. Injectable hydrogels forming in situ through the change in external stimuli have the distinct properties of easy management and minimal invasiveness, and thus provide the advantage of bypassing surgical procedures for administration resulting in better patient compliance. METHODS: The injectable in situ-forming hydrogels can be formed irreversibly or reversibly under physiological stimuli. Amo… Show more

“…The key requirements of an ideal drug delivery system (DDS) are safety, non-toxicity, high efficiency, non-immunogenicity, bioavailability, and targeting. 75 Although many DDS such as liposomes, micelles, nanoparticles, and hydrogels have been developed for effective drug delivery, 75 most of them face two key problems: high systemic toxicity and low bioavailability. Recently, nanoscale EVs, such as exosomes and microvesicles, which have organic tendency, good bioavailability, and low toxicity and immunogenicity, have been added to the field of DDS.…”

“…This may be attributed to the increased solubility of long-chain fatty acids in water at elevated temperature and the resultant increased availability for complex formation. 58,59 Briey, the increased solubility of OAPB enhanced the chance of DBC assembly because of raised possibility of interaction through electrostatic force between OAPB and triamine and might enforced network at low pH conditions. This type of trend was presented by some other studies of different type of VES.…”

“…In general, the complex of anionic and cationic ions occurs based on the electrostatic interactions between charged molecules [ 173 ]. The strength of the polyelectrolyte complex is influenced by the pH value of the solution [ 174 ].…”
