Elevated and super‐elevated CO2 differ in their interactive effects with nitrogen availability on fruit yield and quality of cucumber

Abstract: Elevated CO promotes cucumber yield largely by carbon allocation from source leaves to fruits in high N availability. Besides a dilution effect, carbon allocation to fruits, carbohydrate transformation, and nutrient uptake and assimilation can affect the fruit quality. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…In the present work, the R/S was significantly decreased with N supplies increasing, but was not affected by [CO 2 ] levels ( Table 2). A similar phenomenon was observed in other reports and our previous works [23,28,30,31,52]. Incorporated with current views in the literature, two possible reasons were usually proposed.…”

“…The beneficial effects of CO 2 enrichment on stimulating plant growth and biomass accumulation of crops have been extensively reported [2,5,6,40]. An increase in the DW ranging from 13.5% to 34.4% has been reported for cucumbers, when [CO 2 ] was elevated to 500-760 µmol mol −1 [1,31,33,41,42], and ranged from 43.9% to 128.0% when [CO 2 ] was elevated to 1000-1200 µmol mol −1 [28][29][30][31]43]. In the present work, in moderate N (N3), the increase in the DW was 30.5% and not significant when [CO 2 ] was elevated to 625 µmol mol −1 , and 29.4% and 68.9% when [CO 2 ] was elevated to 1200 µmol mol −1 , at T1 and T2 stage, respectively ( Table 2).…”

“…Nitrogen fertilizer has been shown to stimulate the increase in yield of different plants [24,39]. According to the findings of the present study, the yield of A. mongolica among the nitrogen fertilizer levels resulted in an M-shaped fluctuating pattern.…”
