Elevated levels of a somatomedin-binding protein PP12 in patients with ovarian cancer

Abstract: The circulating levels of placental protein 12 (PP12), a somatomedin-binding protein, were measured by radioimmunoassay in 37 postmenopausal women with ovarian tumors. Elevated levels (above 47 pg/l) were observed in 16 of 25 patients (64%) with malignant and 2 of 12 patients (17%) with benign tumors. Elevated levels were more frequent and higher in patients with advanced disease. Within 1 week of surgery, the levels fell in 13 of 17 cases (77%). In addition to clinical interest, these results contribute to ou… Show more

“…19 Raised serum IGFBP-1 values have been reported in patients with primary liver cancer 20 and ovarian cancer. 21 Whether these serum concentrations of IGFBP-1 are related to tumour cachexia or to production by the tumour itself is unclear. In the serum of patients with non-islet cell tumour hypoglycaemia, free IGF-I and IGF-II, in addition to IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-2 values, are raised.…”

“…The IGFBP-1 was detected in the serum of patients with ovarian carcinomas (Lino et al, 1986) and lung cancer . Furthermore, the IGFBP-2 was found in the supernatant of breast and prostate cancer cells (Adamo et al, 1992;Reeve and Kirby, 1992) and several other human tumour cell lines (Kanety et al, 1993), suggesting IGFBP-2 gene expression by the tumour cells.…”

“…Interestingly, many types of tumors express high levels of placental protein 12 (34,35). While the biological actions of placental protein 12 are unknown, the IGF-I binding capability and its secretion into amniotic fluid suggests that placental protein 12 may regulate fetal growth (36).…”
