“…Heat-treated Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 powders were put in the ball mill having a stainless steel container and 50 stainless steel balls of different sizes ranging from 2.5-to 10-mm diameter and rigorously agitated for 30 minutes; the idea was to coat coarser Al 2 O 3 particles with finer TiO 2 particles on the surface in order to promote wetting of alumina. Similar study was done by Singh et al, [18] where coarser alumina particles were coated with finer MgO particles and improvement in wettability of alumina particles was observed. On the basis of rough calculation of TiO 2 particles (size 53 lm) required to coat spherical Al 2 O 3 particles (size 75 lm), the mixture of powders in the ratio of 1:2 (Al 2 O 3 :TiO 2 ) was taken for milling.…”

“…Different approaches such as alloying and coating have been employed to overcome the adverse surface forces by promoting wettability. In an earlier study, [18] coarse Al 2 O 3 particles were coated with finer MgO particles to improve wetting. In the present study, a similar technique has been used by replacing MgO with TiO 2 , so that there could be reactive wetting due to reduction of surface-coated TiO 2 by molten aluminum.…”

“…However the mechanical characteristics of Al-based MMCs reinforced with microsize ceramic particulates at elevated temperatures was extensively studied [15][16][17][18][19][20], only limited data on the elevated temperatures bebaviour of Al-based nanocomposites are available. Until now the elevated temperatures mechanical properties for such nanocomposites were not sufficiently determined and published.…”

“…7 Most studies on powder metallurgy (PM) MMCs concentrated on a composite with high strength aluminium matrix. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Lai and Chung 14 presented one of the very few papers on MMC using pure aluminium as a matrix. In their work, the MMCs were manufactured by vacuum infiltration of liquid aluminium into a porous particulate perform under inert gas.…”
