Elevation of tumour markers TGF-β, M2-PK, OV-6 and AFP in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-induced rats and their suppression by microalgae Chlorella vulgaris

Abstract: Background Chlorella vulgaris (ChV), a unicellular green algae has been reported to have anticancer and antioxidant effects. The aim of this study was to determine the chemopreventive effect of ChV on liver cancer induced rats by determining the level and expression of several liver tumour markers.MethodsMale Wistar rats (200–250 g) were divided into 4 groups according to the diet given: control group (normal diet), ChV group with three different doses (50, 150 and 300 mg/kg body weight), liver cancer- induced… Show more

“…Steatosis, cholangiocarcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma diagnoses were made via microscopic observation by two trained and independent observers as previously reported [17]. To confirm cholangiocarcinoma and/or hepatocellular carcinoma, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) [18] was detected in formalin fixed paraffin-embedded liver sections using 15 µg/mL chicken anti-rat AFP antigen affinity-purified Polyclonal Antibody (Catalog # AF1369) overnight at 4 °C, counterstained with Vector Blue (Cat. No.…”

“…40 In an in vivo study of the therapeutic effects exerted by an extract of Chlorella vulgaris on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the algae was fed directly to HCC-induced rats and tumor markers, including TGF-β, M2-PK, OV-6, and AFP, were monitored. 41 After 12 weeks of treatment, the extent of oval cell formation and the expression levels of M2-PK, OV-6, AFP, and TGF-β were significantly reduced compared to those of the control group.…”

“…Japan is the leading country in microalgae consumption (Yamamoto et al, 2014), which has been considered to be one of the contributing factors to its highest life expectancy in the world. Moreover, the extracts and isolated natural products from green microalgae show antitumor activity in many cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (Moussavou et al, 2014; Tajul Arifin et al, 2017). However, the antitumor mechanism of green microalgae is still not completely clear, especially the effect on cancer stemness.…”
