Eleventh Grade Students Attitudes Towards Philosophy Class and a Look at Students From the Mirror of Teachers

Abstract

With the inclusion of philosophy courses in the programs, it is aimed to raise individuals who think, question and criticize. In the process of gaining these skills, it is thought that the positive attitude of the students towards the philosophy course may be effective. In this context, the aim of the study is to determine the attitudes of eleventh grade students towards the philosophy course and to evaluate the attitudes of the students from the teachers' point of view. The research was carried out with 200 eleventh grade students studying at five different high schools in Kahramanmaraş province Onikişubat district and ten philosophy teachers working in public schools in the same province and district. The survey model was used in the research, which consists of quantitative and qualitative parts.. Quantitative data were obtained by using the "Philosophy Class Attitude Scale" and qualitative data were obtained by using a semi-structured interview form. The analysis of qualitative data was made by content analysis method. As a result of the research, it was found that the attitudes of the eleventh grade students towards the philosophy course differed significantly by gender, the educational status of the parents and the frequency of reading books. In addition, philosophy course teachers found high school students' attitudes towards philosophy course negative; It has been concluded that the reasons for this are due to factors such as the fact that philosophy questions many subjects, and that few questions are asked in the university exam.
