ELOVL2: Not just a biomarker of aging

Abstract: DNA methylation of the ELOVL2 (Elongation Of Very Long Chain Fatty Acids-Like 2) promoter is one of the most robust molecular biomarkers for chronological age, but whether ELOVL2 plays a functional role in aging has not been explored. ELOVL2 encodes a transmembrane protein involved in the synthesis of very long polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs). These fatty acids play important roles in retinal biology and photoreceptor renewal, key processes implicated in age-related eye diseases such as age-related mac… Show more

“…According to what discussed above and to previous results (Bacalini et al, 2017 ; Slieker et al, 2018 ) the effect size of ELOVL2 probe cg16867657 was lower in CRB respect the other regions, but still significant in our meta-analysis. Elovl2 is an enzyme involved in the elongation of fatty acids and its functional role in aging has been recently suggested (Chao and Skowronska-Krawczyk, 2020 ).…”

“…Another gene to highlight is ELOVL2 , which elongates long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3 ( Chao and Skowronska-Krawczyk, 2020 ). The common buccal CpGs cg16867657 and cg21572722 are linked to ELOVL2 and undergo hypermethylation with age ( Horvath et al., 2018 ; McEwen et al., 2020 ).…”
