Elstera cyanobacteriorum sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from cyanobacterial aggregates in a eutrophic lake

Abstract: A bacterial strain, TH019, was isolated from cyanobacterial aggregates in a eutrophic lake, Taihu Lake, China. Cells were observed to be slightly curved rod-shaped and stained Gram-negative. Optimal growth was obtained at pH 7.0 (range, 5.0-9.0) and 28 °C (range, 20-37 °C) in R2A broth. The cells were found to be positive for oxidase and catalase activities, nitrate reduction and denitrification. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids were identified as C18 : 1 ω6c/C18 : 1 ω7c… Show more

“…These two taxa were significantly abundant in the PA fraction in the current study. Likewise, Hyphomonas , Elstera and Phenylobacterium , which also were enriched in the PA fraction, were documented previously as being attached to cyanobacterial aggregates and to Microcystis colonies (Cai et al, 2017; Pérez‐Carrascal et al, 2021; Zhu, Zhang, Guan, et al, 2019).…”

“…With regard to flocs, uncultured_f_Chitinophagaceae (0.1%, 7.2%, and 11.7%) was the dominant fermentative bacterium with the potential for sugar fermentation under anoxic environments, while uncultured_f_Comamonadaceae (0.1%, 0.2%, and 4.4%) could be an important denitrifier . Meanwhile, the relative abundance of genus Elstera was 45.3% in phase I, but it decreased to 0.8% rapidly in phase III, suggesting that denitrifier Elstera was eliminated under the high loading rate . Furthermore, the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria in seeding sludge was approximately 17.5%, which was much smaller than that in flocs and biofilms.…”

“…According to the Mann-Whitney test, independently of the sampling period, high salinity negatively affected the presence of OtuB0005 (Rivicola), OtuB0006 (Elstera), OtuB0022 (Lysobacter) (Fig. 5a, Table SI 4), NaCl sensitive bacterial genera [40,41] that have not been identified yet as TAG or PHA-storing populations. Nonetheless, all of them reached the highest relative abundance in period C-III of FBR-C (26.21 ± 0.63 %, 21.54 ± 0.03 %, and 2.87 ± 0.08 % for Rivicola, Elstera and Lysobacter respectively), in which the maximum intracellular TAG accumulation was obtained (Fig.…”
