Nordic perspectives on disability studies in education: a review of research in Finland and Iceland

Disability studies in education (DSE) is an interdisciplinary field derived from the need to re-conceptualise special education dominated by a medical perspective on disability. In this article we identify what characterises DSE research and consider whether there is a case for arguing for a specific field of DSE in Finland and Iceland. Our analysis is based on a review of 59 studies published by Finnish and Icelandic scholars during the time period of ratification process of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities from 2007 to 2016 in Finland and Iceland. We suggest that DSE has emerged as a dynamic area of research in both countries. It has provoked researchers to analyse disability in social contexts and turn the gaze from individual person with disabilities to the social structures and educational policies and practices. The fields of DSE in Finland and Iceland have not developed in identical ways and both have fluid crossovers to related fields such as disability studies and inclusive education. We argue for the potential of DSE to contribute to the discussion on educational equality and social justice. However, this requires opportunities to bring together scholars across disciplinary borders.

Κρίνεται αναγκαία η ανάπτυξη εκπαιδευτικών περιβαλλόντων, υλικών και μέσων προσβάσιμων από όλους τους μαθητές συμπεριλαμβανομένων και αυτών με μειωμένη όραση (αμβλύωπες). Επειδή οι αμβλύωπες μαθητές δεν έχουν πρόσβαση στο έντυπο εκπαιδευτικό υλικό, το Ινστιτούτο Εκπαιδευτικής Πολιτικής, στο πλαίσιο του έργου «Σχεδιασμός και ανάπτυξη προσβάσιμου εκπαιδευτικού και εποπτικού υλικού για μαθητές με αναπηρίες» προέβη στην μετατροπή των σχολικών εγχειριδίων της Α' και β' Δημοτικού, για αμβλύωπες μαθητές με στόχο την υποστήριξή τους και την προώθηση ίσων ευκαιριών εκπαίδευσης. Αντικείμενο της εργασίας αυτής αποτελεί η παρουσίαση των προσαρμοσμένων σχολικών εγχειριδίων για αμβλύωπες μαθητές και της μεθοδολογίας και των προδιαγραφών που ακολουθήθηκαν για την υλοποίηση του έργου. Τα σχολικά εγχειρίδια έχουν διαφοροποιηθεί ώστε τα συστατικά τους μέρη (κείμενο, σχήματα, εικόνες, κ. ά.) να εμφανίζονται μεγεθυμένα. Αναπτύχθηκαν δύο σειρές σχολικών εγχειριδίων με κείμενο μεγέθους 18, 22 και 28 στιγμών της γραμματοσειράς Arial bold. Θα συζητηθούν τα οφέλη προσαρμογής, ώστε όλοι οι εμπλεκόμενοι να κινητοποιηθούν, για να συμμετάσχουν στις διαδικασίες υλοποίησης και χρήσης του υλικού. Τα προσαρμοσμένα σχολικά εγχειρίδια καλύπτουν τις ανάγκες των αμβλυώπων μαθητών πανελλαδικά. Τέλος, το υλικό μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί από εκπαιδευτικούς, σχολικούς συμβούλους για διδακτικούς και επιμορφωτικούς σκοπούς. It is necessary to develop educational environments, materials and tools accessible to all students including those with low vision. These students do not have access to printed educational material. So the Institute of Educational Policy, under the project "Design and development of accessible educational and teaching aids for students with disabilities" made the conversion of textbooks of the first and second elementary school into text for low vision students in order to support and promote equal educational opportunities. The object of this work is the presentation of accessible textbooks for partially sighted students and the methodology and specifications followed for the implementation of the project. This article explores the possibilities offered by visual methods in the move towards inclusive research, reviewing some methodological implications of said research and reflecting on the potential of visual methods to meet these methodological requirements. A study into the impact of work on social inclusion and the social relationships of people suffering from severe mental illness serves to illustrate the use of visual methods such as photo elicitation and graphic elicitation in the context of in-depth interviews with the aim of improving the aforementioned target group's participation in research, participation understood as one of the basic elements of inclusive approaches. On the basis of this study, we reflect on the potential of visual methods to improve the inclusive approach to research and conclude that these methods are open and flexible in awarding participants a voice, allowing people with severe mental illness to express their needs, and therefore adding value to said approach.
