Embedding school cultures and climates that promote evidence-based practice implementation for youth with autism: A qualitative study

Abstract: Schools play a major role in delivering behavioral health services to autistic youth. School culture and climate are strong predictors of the extent to which these services incorporate evidence-based practices; however, little is known about how school leaders shape culture and climate. Drawing on the concept of culture and climate embedding mechanisms, we conducted a qualitative study to understand the ways in which school principals embed cultures and climates that support effective implementation of evidenc… Show more

“…Conceptual frameworks are used to explain the topic of study, including key factors and relationships amongst relevant variables (Miles et al, 2014 ). Similar methodological approaches have been used in other qualitative examinations of stakeholder perspectives on school-based services for autistic youth (Elias et al, 2019 ; Elias and White, 2018 ; White et al, 2016 ; Williams et al, 2021 ). The Taxonomy for Transition Programming framework (Kohler, 1996 ) was chosen as the theoretical model for the coding scheme as it is a schematic of transition practices that are associated with positive outcomes in typically developing high school students and thus would situate results within the broader literature on postsecondary transition.…”

“…When given space to practice this, it can also lead to whole-school learning and, thus, a culture shift. Ample research, from the foundational educational effectiveness work of Hargreaves [71] to recent studies of evidence-usedpromoting school cultures (e.g., Williams et al [72], looking at evidence-based practice to support children with Autism in Australian schools), highlights the complexity of school culture and school culture change, particularly in relation to evidence-based practice, but also identifies productive mechanisms by which teachers may develop the collaborative turn that our findings suggest is supportive of better evidence use.…”
