Embodiment of Sadness and Depression—Gait Patterns Associated With Dysphoric Mood

Abstract: Objective: To analyze gait patterns associated with sadness and depression. Embodiment theories suggest a reciprocal relationship between bodily expression and the way in which emotions are processed. Methods: In Study 1, the gait patterns of 14 inpatients suffering from major depression were compared with those of matched never-depressed participants. In Study 2, we employed musical mood induction to induce sad and positive mood in a sample of 23 undergraduates. A Fourier-based description of walking data ser… Show more

“…In particular, individuals with depression walk slowly with a shorter stride length, longer standing phase, and increased gait variability. 15,16 These gait patterns characteristic of depression have been shown to be associated with falls. 17,18 The complex relationship between depression, cognitive performance, motor performance, and risk of falls is illustrated by a recent study that found that the association between depression and slowed choice stepping reaction time (which is a composite measure of fall risk) was mediated by two paths: one through quadriceps strength and the other through executive function, with both mediating variables then influencing choice stepping reaction time via simple reaction time and balance.…”

“…Our emotional state is often expressed in a variety of means, such as face, voice, body posture, and walking gait (1,2). Many studies are conducted in strict laboratory settings, which may impede the overall ecological validity of the findings.…”

“…A useful source of information for assisting an owner is his/her gait (walking) signal, because the human gait conveys a variety of information such as personality [13], gender [14], physical or clinical condition [15], [16], and mood [17], and can easily be captured by accelerometers. In particular, personality in gait signal plays quite an important role when recognizing the person carrying the device.…”
