EMBRACE@Nançay: an ultra wide field of view prototype for the SKA

Abstract: A revolution in radio receiving technology is underway with the development of densely packed phased arrays for radio astronomy. This technology can provide an exceptionally large field of view, while at the same time sampling the sky with high angular resolution. Such an instrument, with a field of view of over 100 square degrees, is ideal for performing fast, all-sky, surveys, such as the "intensity mapping" experiment to measure the signature of Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations in the HI mass distribution at … Show more

“…Appropriate antenna arrays were developed as design studies for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The EMBRACE test array (Torchinsky et al 2015(Torchinsky et al , 2016 is an 8 × 8 m array consisting of 4600 dual-polarisation (only one fully equipped) elements for the frequency range between 900-1500 MHz. The original analogue beamformer cannot directly be used for the FFT-based beamformer design, but we are considering options to combine the existing array or a variant of it with a CHIME-like beamformer as a first step in the direction of a sensitive wide-field FRB search instrument.…”

“…EMBRACE at Nançay has been fully operational since 2011. Characterization of the 70.8 m 2 dense array at Nançay is reported in [34,35]. APERTIF, a focal plane array instrument, currently being commissioned, uses 12 dishes of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope [36].…”

“…The two EMBRACE stations began with an initial period of engineering testing on the partially complete arrays (Olofsson et al 2009;Wijnholds et al 2009). EMBRACE@Nançay has been fully operational since 2011 and now performs regularly scheduled astronomical observations, such as pulsar observations and extragalactic spectral line observing (Torchinsky et al 2013(Torchinsky et al , 2015. EM-BRACE system characteristics, such as beam main lobe and system temperature, are behaving as expected.…”
