Embryonic expression of the chicken Sox2, Sox3 and Sox11 genes suggests an interactive role in neuronal development

Abstract: Three chicken Sox (SRY-like box) genes have been identified that show an interactive pattern of expression in the developing embryonic nervous system. cSox2 and cSox3 code for related proteins and both are predominantly expressed in the immature neural epithelium of the entire CNS of HH stage 10 to 34 embryos. cSox11 is related to cSox2 and cSox3 only by virtue of containing an SRY-like HMG-box sequence but shows extensive homology with Sox-4 at its C-terminus. cSox11 is expressed in the neural epithelium but … Show more

“…Therefore, we cannot agree with either of the conclusions of Knoetgen et al (1999b) that the endoblast on its own elicits any detectable change in the adjacent host ectoblast after transplantation or that the avian organizer is confined to Hensen's node only. Foley et al (2000) studied the eventual role of the early deep layer (endophyll and/or sickle endoblast) on the expression of the molecular markers Sox3 (Uwanogho et al, 1995) and Otx2 (Bally-Cuif et al, 1995) in the upper layer. From Hamburger and Hamilton stage 6 -7 on, Sox3 is specifically expressed in the entire chicken neural plate and Otx2 is expressed throughout the forebrain and midbrain.…”

“…3A). In our experiments, we focused on the gonadal expression of Sox2 as its expression elsewhere has been previously reported [27,28]. Oct4 is expressed only in germ cells after E9.0 and is therefore an excellent marker of developing PGCs.…”

“…In the peripheral nervous system, the Sox11 transcription factor has been of interest because of its high level of expression in developing trigeminal and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) (Uwanogho et al, 1995, Hargrave et al, 1997 and potential role in the development of gliomas (Weigle et al, 2005). In sensory neurons the high level of embryonic Sox11 expression is markedly reduced at birth (Hargrave et al, 1997, Tanabe et al, 2003, Jankowski et al, 2004, suggesting tight control of its transcriptional activity during postnatal neuron maturation.…”
