Emended Descriptions of Prevotella denticola, Prevotella loescheii, Prevotella veroralis, and Prevotella melaninogenica

Abstract: During studies of human periodontal disease, a number of bacterial strains were encountered that, on the basis of results of standard biochemical tests, appeared to be PrevoteZla buccah, PrevoteUa denticola, PrevoteUa rnelaninogenica, or Prevoteh loescheii. However, use of the standard biochemical tests, cellular fatty acid analyses, and the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis patterns of soluble proteins resulted in conflicting identifications of these strains. The results of tests for cellobiose fermentation,… Show more

“…Interestingly, Prevotella denticola was among the other strongly periodontitis-associated OTUs. P. denticola was previously found to increase in incidence with increasing severity of periodontal disease based on culture [58], was detected at higher prevalence in periodontitis patients than healthy subjects using species-specific PCR [16] and was strongly associated with chronic periodontitis in another recent pyrosequencing study [18] …”

“…Since the original study of Ifkovits and Ragheb, there have been numerous reports detailing the cellular FAs of anaerobic gram-negative bacilli (2, 4, 10, 23,32,35,36,38,40,46,53,62,65). Most of these later reports focused on description or taxonomy of single species or the species of a single genus (2, 10, 32, 35, 38, 46) or on species restricted to certain ecological niches (4, 10, 23,38,40,65), particularly the human oral cavity and the rumen.…”
