Emergence and evolution of developmental resilience science over half a century

Ann S. Masten

Abstract: This reflection on the history and future of developmental resilience science (DRS) highlights its co-emergence with developmental psychopathology (DP), as well as the roles of this journal and its founding editor, Dante Cicchetti, in the evolution of these intertwined domains of scholarship. A remarkable constellation of scholars at the University of Minnesota shaped the course of both conceptual frameworks and their dissemination. I describe fundamental assumptions common to DP and DRS frameworks that reflec… Show more

“…The multiple perspectives published in this special issue honoring the lifetime contributions of Dr Cicchetti beautifully illustrate ways to continue progress. This exciting future work includes investigating prenatal and intergenerational influences on development (Beeghly, 2024;Bush, 2024), advancing the frontiers of resilience research (Masten, 2024), growing interdisciplinary training (Gotlib et al, 2024), expanding participant representation and inclusivity (Tyrell et al, 2024), and informing the program and policy choices of governmental and non-governmental organizations (Scott et al, 2024). Here, we contribute our perspective that data science and machine learning techniques are valuable tools for the advancement of developmental psychopathology research.…”

“…Resilience has been studied across multiple systems of functioning and is defined as the capacity of a dynamic system to adapt to challenges that threaten the system's function, survival, or development (Masten, 2024). Cellular resilience, among birds and mammals, highlights how somatic stressors incurred in inflammation is important in the development of longevity, with longer-lived species showing greater resilience to immune-related stressors (Finch et al, 2010).…”

“…This is especially significant in the context of a growing emphasis within resilience research on the importance of multi-systemic approaches. Such approaches underline, inter alia, how 'ongoing multisystem interactions' 12 fundamentally shape and contour resilience. This article brings something new in this regard by exploring how intersecting resilience discourses reflect different systems and their cross-scale dynamics, which, as will be discussed, is also a different way of thinking about resilience and complexity.…”
