Emergence of a Salmonella Rissen ST469 clinical isolate carrying blaNDM-13 in China

Abstract: New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-13 (NDM-13) is an NDM variant that was first identified in 2015 and has not been detected in Salmonella species prior to this study. Here we describe the first identification of a Salmonella Rissen strain SR33 carrying blaNDM-13. The aim of this study was to molecularly characterize SR33’s antimicrobial resistance and virulence features as well as investigate the genetic environment of blaNDM-13. The Salmonella Rissen SR33 strain was isolated from a patient with fever and diarrhea… Show more

“…Of these, IS Aba125 was conservative in bla NDM-5 -positive isolates. It is consistent with the discovery that IS Aba125 (intact or truncated) upstream of bla NDM is common in bla NDM genetic settings [ 23 ], indicating its’ important role in bla NDM transmission. NDM, a highly prevalent plasmid-borne metallo-β-lactamase, has been identified in various species of Enterobacteriaceae worldwide.…”

“…The bla NDM gene previously reported to be carried by Salmonella appears on the IncX3 ( bla NDM-5 ), IncA/C ( bla NDM-1 ), IncFII ( bla NDM-5 ), IncFIB ( bla NDM-5 ), and IncI1 ( bla NDM-13 ) plasmids, and chromosome ( bla NDM-9 and bla NDM-1 ) [ 28 ]; particularly, the IncX3 and IncA/C plasmids are the most prevalent. However, IncI1-Iα plasmid carrying bla NDM-5 has not appeared in Salmonella , only a Salmonella Rissen ST469 harboring IncI1 plasmid carrying bla NDM-13 [ 29 ] .…”

“…Although carbapenem-resistant NTS is still extremely rare, it will pose a serious threat to antimicrobial therapy once it occurs ( 11 , 12 ). Several carbapenemases have been reported in NTS, including KPC, IMP, NDM, VIM, and OXA-48 ( 11 , 13 15 ). Here, we report an NDM-5-producing carbapenem-resistant S. enterica serovar Typhimurium from an outpatient.…”
