“…Forensic experts/ podiatrists deal with pedal evidence for its significance in crime scene investigations (20). Stride length and different types of footprints, tracks, and trails can give valuable information about the gait of an individual and whether the person was walking at a normal pace, running, carrying load, or the direction of the movement.…”

“…On the other hand, the general shape and size of the foot, as well as the impression made by the foot, depends upon the structure of the different bones comprising the foot. The way the bones are held by the connective tissues also differs, not only from individual to individual but also from left to right feet of the same individual [2,[26][27][28]. The foot is also affected by racial and regional variations, age, gender, lifestyle, nutritional status, shoe type as well as congenital and climatic factors [29,30].…”

“…The study of the human foot and its impressions has countless implications in medico-legal practice [1][2][3][4]. Certainly, due to the increasing frequency of mass disasters and the likelihood of recovering isolated pedal elements in such circumstances, forensic experts may sometimes be confronted with nothing rather than foot to determine the biological profile a victim [4,5].…”

“…At a crime scene, footprints have the potential to leave behind forensic evidence in the form of marks or impressions on the contact surface, the placing and dimensions of which can be considered in terms of the overall shape, or morphology. 1,2 A bare footprint can also show features from the skin of the plantar surface of the foot, namely papillary ridge detail and crease marks 3,4 and in these cases, a ridge pattern analyst would use this type of detail to demonstrate individuality to either establish or exclude associations with the postulated owner of that footprint. [5][6][7] Determination of the individuality of the human footprint shape for forensic identification purposes has been the subject of many studies [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] and whilst research in this area has indicated that footprint shape may be highly individual or even possibly unique, this is not certain.…”
