Emergence of gyrovirus 3 in commercial broiler chickens with transmissible viral proventriculitis

Abstract: Gyrovirus 3 (GyV3) has been identified in faeces from children with acute gastroenteritis. However, whether GyV3 is prevalent in poultry has not been determined to date. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to isolate GyV3 from commercial broiler chickens with transmissible viral proventriculitis (TVP) in China. The complete genome of the virus shares 98.4% sequence identity with the FecGy strain that causes acute gastroenteritis in children. Epidemiological investigation from 2013 to 2017 rev… Show more

“…All together raises the question of whether another virus, different from the CPNV, is related to some of these TVP-affected cases. On this line, several other virus including adenovirus (Goodwin, et al, 1996), Gyrovirus (Li et al, 2018) and picornavirus (Kim, et al, 2015), have been reported to be associated with TVP, although none of them could be definitively proved as cause of TVP. The investigation of such potential different aetiologies was however beyond the aims of the current work, and further studies are needed to get further insights in this area.…”

“…The members of the genus Gyrovirus , which consists of the CAV prototype and nine other unofficially recognized species (HGyV/AGV2, GyV3, GyV4, GyV5, GyV6, GyV7, GyV8, GyV9 and GyV10), have been identified in chickens 10,11,17,18 , humans 8,15,16,19,22 , sea birds 21 , mice 25 , ferrets 24,29 , dogs 26 and cats 25 . To date, there is only one report that CAV circulating in domestic cats in China 25 .…”

“…HGyV/AGV2 has been identified in sera and tissues of chickens 1012 , commercial poultry vaccines 13 , the blood of healthy blood donors 14 , HIV-infected patients and organ transplant recipients 15 , and the skin of healthy humans 8 . The third gyrovirus named GyV3 was identified for the first time in the feces of diarrhoeic children from Chile in 2012 16 and had been also found in chickens with transmissible viral proventriculitis and human feces in China 17,18 . GyV4 was found in chicken meat and human stools in Hong Kong 18 .…”

“…The PacBio-RSII sequencing platform (Novogene) was used to search proventricular viruses of TVP in chickens. Proventricular samples from diseased chickens were treated as previously described ( 27 ). BLASTx was used to translate sequence subreads and search for similar viral sequences.…”
