Emergence of Raoultella ornithinolytica in human infections from different hospitals in Ecuador with OXA-48-producing resistance

José E. Villacís,
Hugo G. Castelán-Sánchez,
Jorge Rojas-Vargas
et al.

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study was to highlight the clinical and molecular features of 13 Raoultella ornithinolytica strains isolated from clinical environments in Ecuador, and to perform comparative genomics with previously published genomes of Raoultella spp. As Raoultella is primarily found in environmental, clinical settings, we focused our work on identifying mechanisms of resistance that can provide this bacterium an advantage to establish and persist in hospital environments.MethodsWe analyzed 13 stra… Show more

“…Raoultella ornithinolytica has demonstrated a concerning trend of antimicrobial resistance, posing challenges in clinical management. Case reports have highlighted its ability to develop resistance mechanisms against multiple antibiotic classes, including β-lactams, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides [ 14 ]. These cases underscore the clinical significance of Raoultella ornithinolytica as a multidrug-resistant pathogen and emphasize the importance of antibiotic stewardship and ongoing surveillance to combat the emergence and spread of resistance in healthcare settings.…”
