Emergence of Zika virus infection in China

Abstract: Currently, Zika virus (ZIKV) is spreading across the world and no ZIKV infection cases have ever been reported in China. Here, we aimed to determine whether ZIKV infection exists in China. Blood samples of 273 healthy individuals were collected from Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China in March 2019. We found that 9.5% (26/273) and 1.8% (5/273) of healthy persons were positive to ZIKV total antibody (IgG and/or IgM) IgM antibody, respectively. All ZIKV positive plasma samples were negative to Dengue virus and… Show more

“…A 2017 study of healthy adults (n = 801) in Vietnam estimated 1.1% seroprevalence using a ZIKV neutralization assay ( 39 ). An additional study in Guangxi Province, China, in March 2019 found 6% of 273 participants bound to ZIKV NS1 using IgG ELISA testing and neutralized ZIKV in cell cultures ( 40 ). Those past studies, especially those relying on tests of whole Zika virions and full-length antigens, had poor specificity, mainly because of antibodies induced by DENV infections cross-reacting with ZIKV antigens.…”

“…A globally approved dengue vaccine is still under development, and there is no specific treatment for dengue fever [28]. In addition, studies have shown that residents in China and Southeast Asia also face potential threats from the Zika virus [29].…”

“…Liaoning province is located in northeast of China, where neither Zika nor Dengue virus [ 8 , 9 ] are endemic. Although Liaoning province had a low prevalence of JE [ 10 ], there was an outbreak of 69 cases with a 30.4% fatality rate in the summer of 2018, which was very similar to the prevalence of JEV infection in the north of Ningxia in 2018 [ 11 ].…”
