Emergency Monitoring of a Tailings Pond Leakage Accident Based on the GEE Platform

Abstract: The utilization of mineral resources plays an important role in supporting and promoting economic development and social progress. As a necessary facility for the development and utilization of mineral resources, tailings ponds will cause a series of safety and environmental problems once accidents occur. Based on the Sentinel-2 images obtained from the GEE (Google Earth Engine) platform, this paper carried out emergency monitoring of the Yichun Luming Mining tailings pond leakage accident on 28 March 2020, th… Show more

“…The wastewater discharged after the completion of ore processing activities is the main acidic water in mining areas; second, sulfide minerals stacked in the open air in the mine waste dump and tailings pond can easily oxidize and form sulfate ions and heavy metal ions after contacting with the air. In the case of precipitation or transportation treatment, they are enriched in the mining area through leaching and form acidic wastewater; third, groundwater seepage and tailings pond waste leakage are inevitable in mining activities [35], and there may be rocks and soils containing sulfur or heavy metal elements in the underground strata, which may dissolve and form acidic mine water in long-term mining activities. In this study, developing this large molybdenum mine may produce acid mine drainage in these three ways.…”

“…In China alone, more than one billion tons of tailings are discharged annually and stored in >12 000 tailings dams, with over 30% exhibiting abnormal operation and a high risk of leakage . One of the most serious incidents occurred in 2020 at a molybdenum mine tailing pond in Yichun, China, where over 100 tonnes of mine drainage flowed approximately 3 km . Understanding the biogeochemical evolution of key elements and the mobility of accompanying contaminants within such mine drainage is the precondition for evaluating their environmental risks and selecting appropriate rehabilitation technologies.…”
