Emerging Adult Risky Sexual Behavior Predicted by Parental Overprotection: Moderated Mediation Analysis

Abstract: Parental control behaviors are suggested to be related to emerging adult outcomes, such as risky sexual behavior. Although parental control behaviors are more likely to be considered protective against risky sexual behavior, the relation between parental overprotection and risky sexual behavior is unclear. “…Specific to research on children’s substance use and delinquency, relationship qualities and dynamics that characterize the parent–adolescent bond—such as attachment security or perceived familial support—are protective factors during adolescence and across the transition to adulthood (Bell et al, 2000; Dixon et al, 2008). As youth explore an increasingly complex social landscape that includes information about socially accepted behavior, parents serve as role models that shape young peoples’ risk-taking choices (Rogers & McKinney, 2019; Oetting & Donnermeyer, 1998; Wood et al, 2004). Importantly, parents influence their children’s decision-making throughout both childhood and adolescence, and evidence indicates that close and supportive parent–child relationships are associated with fewer child risk behaviors overtime (Ohannessian et al, 2016; Padilla-Walker & Son, 2019; Russell & Gordon, 2017).…”
