Emerging and Reemerging Aedes-Transmitted Arbovirus Infections in the Region of the Americas: Implications for Health Policy

Abstract: The increasing geographical spread and disease incidence of arboviral infections are among the greatest public health concerns in the Americas. The region has observed an increasing trend in dengue incidence in the last decades, evolving from low to hyperendemicity. Yellow fever incidence has also intensified in this period, expanding from sylvatic-restricted activity to urban outbreaks. Chikungunya started spreading pandemically in 2005 at an unprecedented pace, reaching the Americas in 2013. The following ye… Show more

“…Vector-borne diseases are among the most significant public health burdens in the world. In addition to dengue fever which is responsible for 390 million infections per year, the emergence or re-emergence of yellow fever, chikungunya fever and Zika fever resulted in pandemics with significant morbidity [ 1 – 3 ]. These diseases are caused by arboviruses that are transmitted to humans through the bites of vector mosquitoes.…”

“…Globalization and other anthropogenic factors have allowed this mosquito to thrive in diverse landscapes and facilitate urban transmission cycles of dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and others [2]. In the Americas, all four serotypes of DENV have re-emerged causing consistent epidemics from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean [3]. The Asian lineage of CHIKV first arrived in the Caribbean in 2014 and spread throughout the Americas in just a few years [4], resulting in 338,963 confirmed human cases [5].…”

“…The successful response to the next "Zika-like" intrusion to the health and well-being of newborns will arguably be dependent on how well the current measles situation is handled. Other recent crises in Brazil include Chikungunya, dengue, and yellow fever outbreaks 14 . Measles for Brazil and other countries becomes the "litmus test" of the capacity development required for addressing any infectious disease threat, and ultimately global health security.…”
