Emerging Biomarkers and Targeted Therapies in Feline Mammary Carcinoma

Abstract: Feline mammary carcinoma (FMC) is a common aggressive malignancy with a low survival rate that lacks viable therapeutic options beyond mastectomy. Recently, increasing efforts have been made to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying FMC development, using the knowledge gained from studies on human breast cancer to discover new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, thus reinforcing the utility of the cat as a cancer model. In this article, we review the current knowledge on FMC pathogenesis, biomarkers,… Show more

“…The non-luminal subtypes of FMC are made up of HER2-positive and triple-negative [ 8 , 37 ]. The HER2-positive subtype of FMC is designated by the overexpression of HER2 and lack of estrogen and progesterone receptors [ 8 , 36 ].…”

“…The same happens with the study of PV in cats and dogs, which can be extrapolated to studies of PV in humans, so it is necessary to study these two former species to benefit the three species. For example, it has been reported that Fc mammary carcinoma cancer may be useful as a model for human breast cancer because the markers and pathology are very similar to human breast cancer [ 64 , 65 , 66 ]. These similarities could occur with PV-associated cancers in humans, cats, and even dogs.…”

“…A deep understanding is needed to unveil therapeutic options aimed at improving the cat’s clinical outcome. Such studies are limited by a lack of feline cell lines available for cytotoxicity assays ( 22 ). Moreover, when comparing the two formulations of doxorubicin, the physical properties of the liposome play a major role in altering the drug’s pharmacokinetics, a factor intricately tied to both efficacy and adverse reactions ( 23 ).…”
