Emerging ofptxP3 lineage inBordetella pertussis strains circulating in a population in northeastern Mexico

Abstract: We determined the molecular epidemiology of Bordetella pertussis isolates to evaluate its potential impact on pertussis reemergence in a population of Mexico. Symptomatic and asymptomatic cases were included. Pertussis infection was confirmed by culture and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Selected B. pertussis isolates were further analysed; i.e. clonality was analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and ptxP-ptxA, prn, fim2 and fim3 typing was performed by PCR and sequencing. Out of 11 8… Show more

“…The presence of different allelic profiles of recent circulating strains in Iran compared to the vaccine strains has been reported by Pertussis Reference Laboratory of Pasteur Institute of Iran [19,17,20]. The predominant antigenic profile among the isolated strains has been ptxP3, ptxA1, prn2, fim2-1 and fim3-2 which were similar to the other studies all over the world like The Netherlands, Tunisia and Mexico [6,21,7,11]. However, genomic pattern analysis of Iranian patients' isolates by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) has shown low heterogeneity among the isolates which indicates clonal spread of B. pertussis over the past decade.…”

“…Poland is the country with highest vaccination coverage, where WCV have been majorly used and completely shifted from ptxA 2 to ptxA 1 and ptxP1-ptxP3, prn1-prn2 and fim2-1 to fim2-2; alleles were reported in clinical isolates [ 44 , 45 ]. The wP vaccine has been used in Mexico for more than 50 years, where the appearance of ptxP3 strains started initially between 2006 and 2014 [ 46 ]. The predominant profile of circulating strains from Cambodia was ptxP3/ ptxA 1/prn2/ fim3 -1, where WCV was introduced in 1986 [ 47 ].…”

“…The Secretariat of Health of Nuevo León, Mexico, has an extensive collection of 352 B. pertussis isolates recovered between 2007 and 2014. We previously characterized 113 of the isolates using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and identified one major clone (A1) and three closely related clones ( 14 ). In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing of four representative clones of B. pertussis circulating in the north of Mexico ( Table 1 ).…”
