Emerging Pharmacologic Treatments for Adolescent Substance Use: Challenges and New Directions

Abstract: Adolescence is a key period in the development of substance use and misuse. Substance use typically begins during adolescence and prevalence rates for many substance use disorders peak before age 21 years. Yet, despite clinical demand, treatments for youth rely almost entirely on psychosocial interventions that yield only modest benefit. One potential way to improve treatment effects is to augment the best available psychosocial interventions with pharmacotherapy. Although pharmacotherapy research has advanced… Show more

“…Specifically, we examined the sequenced relationship between craving and heavy drinking. This approach is well suited to test intervention effects on substance use and, perhaps more uniquely, to evaluate which treatment- induced changes (i.e., mechanisms) account for intervention effects and under what conditions (Miranda & Treloar, 2016).…”

“…One potential approach to enhancing treatment outcome is to consider the use of adjunctive medications. There is limited research on MAUD in this population 68 . However, there is preliminary evidence for the tolerability, safety, and efficacy of naltrexone in adolescents with AUD 69,70 .…”

“…Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods use repeated assessments to capture participants' emotional, behavioral, or cognitive experiences via mobile electronic devices, in real time, while participants are in their natural environment (Shiffman, 2009;Stone & Shiffman, 1994). This form of data collection allows researchers to understand momentary effects of acute alcohol intoxication while in the natural environment (Miranda & Treloar, 2016).…”

This form of data collection allows researchers to understand momentary effects of acute alcohol intoxication while in the natural environment (Miranda & Treloar, 2016). Ecological momentary assessment also enhances the generalizability of findings by reducing recall bias that can affect more traditional global or single occasion measures that rely exclusively on retrospective reporting.…”
